PSYCHOLOGICAL REVIEW
Captain Kirk displays strong leadership qualities exhibited in two separate ways, an inability to accept circumstances objective observers classify as mission failures and a particular concern for the welfare of his crew. This is common in most captains, but pronounced in Kirk at an unusually high degree even when it runs counter to mission priorities. Despite his youth and inexperience, he displays little doubt of his own judgement and capabilities. He has an optimistic crew of the future, and sees his role as well as Starfleet's as ambassadors of humanity.

SECONDARY SPECIALITY
Captain Kirk began taking an interest in starship design when he was a student at Starfleet Academy. Kirk's thesis project (currently unfinished given his subsequent commission as Captain) postulated that for a starship captain, understandings the inner workings of the ship was equally important to understanding the crew. As Captain of the Enterprise, Kirk has continued to study and test potential modifications to the ship with the help of his Chief Engineering Officer, Lieutenant Scott. When asked about his strong interest to "learn everything there is to know" about the technical abilities of a starship, Kirk replied saying he was facing one of his own fears. He is aware that, as captain of a starship, he is responsible for both his crew and what he refers to as an incredibly complex machine. "In space, getting something just a little bit wrong is not an option". Kirk believes that his high confidence in himself and his crew remains his greatest tool in completing missions. He always wants to be sure that he never puts himself or his crew in situation where lack of technical knowledge on his part increases the jeopardy of the situation.
